This Month: Seaside Connection - a refreshing walk along the coastal bluffs of Wilder RanchSaturday, September 21st, gather at 10:45am, walk leaves promptly at 11:00am.
The Santa Cruz coastline awaits discovery on Wilder Ranch State Park’s 7,000 acres. From the crest of Ben Lomond Mountain, the landscape rolls down ancient wave-cut terraces through the marsh lands of a nature preserve to the seashore. Step back in time to the late 1800's and visit an early dairy ranch. You can explore California's early ranching history by visiting an 1897 Victorian home, or experience a 1896 water-powered machine shop. Bring a picnic to enjoy on the front lawn, and visit the farm animals. With more than 35 miles of trail, you can adventure into the Santa Cruz Mountains or walk along the coastal bluffs.
Directions
1401 Coast Road, Santa Cruz. We will meet near the restrooms in the main parking lot. The park is north of Santa Cruz, west of Highway 1, a mile or so past Western Drive. From Highway 17, take Hwy 1 N towards Half Moon Bay for 1 mile. Turn right on Mission St (also still Highway 1). Continue for 3.2 miles. Turn left into the Wilder Ranch driveway. Watch for the sign.
Entrance is free, but parking is $10 last we checked. Free parking is available outside of the park on Highway 1, but you will have to walk into the parking lot a little ways.
Bring water and a snack to share. Masks are encouraged, but not mandatory.
We walk in silence on the way in - doing so brings Nature so much closer to us, as we take in not only the sights, but the sounds and even smells of a nice country walk.
At a turnaround spot we will rest and share food. (Yes, we can do that again!)
Then we gab like magpies all the way back. It's always a great time.
Check ahead to make sure the walk is happening! Poor weather and, frankly, past attendance may cancel a walk. [email protected] or leave us a voicemail at (831) 469-0336
Please join us, and if you have any semi-secluded spots you'd like us to explore (nothing too strenuous), please let us know!
