Online event | Sussex, NB
Let's celebrate Earth Day by getting in touch with nature and exploring the biodiversity our watershed has to offer! This is a remote event - go outside at your own leisure, no social interaction required ;)
To participate, download the free app iNaturalist and upload as many observations as possible within the Kennebecasis watershed. Seek out anything and everything: birds, bugs, plants, fungi and lichen, etc. to help us better understand local biodiversity and species distribution during this transitional time of year. The participant with the most species observations will win a prize! RULES BELOW.
The iNaturalist app is fun and educational, but it also serves as an excellent research and conservation tool for citizens and scientists alike, which improves as more people use it. Therefore, we ask that participants are honest about the timeframe of their observations. For instance, if you upload a photo you took in March, don't say you saw it in April. Please respect the accuracy of this important database.
(Note: you can use the iNaturalist website instead of the app if you wish, but the app is better for on-the-go observing)
THE RULES ----------------------------------------------------
1) Join the Kennebecasis River Watershed project on iNaturalist: https://www.inaturalist.org/.../kennebecasis-river-watershed
2) Observations must have taken place within Kennebecasis watershed boundaries. Observations will be automatically uploaded to the project (unless you are out of bounds, in which case your observations will not be included). You can view the map on the Kennebecasis River Watershed project page (linked above) to check boundaries.
3) Uploads must have been observed on April 22nd, 2026. Please be honest. Observations must be a photo or recording, and include the date and location. Please ensure photo quality is adequate for identification. Photo quality will be subject to the judgement of KWRC staff.
We will allow the following day, April 23rd, for participants to finish uploading their observations. This is to encourage nature-time instead of screen-time, if you prefer to upload your observations after your nature excursion.
And that's it! Get out there and have fun 🙂 The winner will be contacted via private message on iNaturalist after April 23rd to receive a small prize. Be sure to check your messages! See less
