FEATURING CYNTHIA MARIE, CHARLES MCCULLOUGH AND KEN DEMITH
Brent Funkhouser began writing songs to quell his adolescent boredom, and quickly fell head-first into a life-long obsession. Growing up in a small town on the edge of Appalachia meant entertainment options were limited, and music provided a creative remedy. Not quite fitting the mold of country despite his Shenandoah drawl, Brent half-jokingly describes his music as y’alternative (or as a friend once said, “not redneck, but redneck adjacent”).
Charles McCullough is a wayfaring troubadour who has embarked on an everlasting musical ramble. Over the years and miles, Charles has performed at untold fairs, festivals, clubs, pubs, dives, and house parties. He draws inspiration from the bedrock of folk, country, blues, and rock ‘n roll. His music channels the cosmic echoes of dim honky tonks, smoky carnival tents, distant radio signals, & minstrel spirit animals.
Cynthia Marie is a seasoned pianist with a love for improvisation and a passion to create. From jazz & blues to folk, pop, and original works, her eclectic songs dance with ease and emotion. Her latest full-length album “Harbor" has been featured on WERA.FM, Voices from the DMV, FEMchord, DC Music Rocks, Takoma Radio, Hometown Sounds, and WAMU Bandwidth. She is a recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Independent Artist Award and has performed at favorite DMV venues such as: Pearl Street Warehouse, Jammin’ Java, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, and Black Cat. She resides in Maryland, where she enjoys teaching piano to her students at Mike’s Music in Ellicott City and online at her studio in Columbia. She loves introducing an eclectic repertoire to her students ages 5 to adult, including jazz improvisation, blues, classical gems, and pop songs.
Ken Demith began his own songwriting journey at 17 when an injury sidelined him from his obsession with athletics. Bored in his room with a neglected Japanese telecaster and his stepfather's recording equipment, a love for recording music evolved. While pursuing a career in graphic design, Ken wrote continuously, but didn’t perform in public or release any music for years until in 1998 he met Tony Ammerman and fellow singer/songwriter Steve Brown, and they formed the band mercyservice. Armed with a dozen or more songs, the band enlisted producer Rob Wexler to helm their debut album. When the band added accomplished songwriters and performers Rick Reid and DW Hadley to form The Comealongs a few years later, their brand of music mixed edgy lyrics with multiple genres and high energy performances that started attracting fans across Texas as they opened for national and regional touring acts before disbanding. Still energized by playing live and recording music, Ken began the journey that led to the formation of his band the Ken Demith Collection. Ken works as a non-profit executive by day and stays committed and passionate with the art and wants to share his music with people and is always humbled and appreciative of those who take the time to listen.
