Ten Monday evening choral workshops this Summer, directed by Scott Inglis-Kidger.
The illustrious Medici family were huge supporters of the arts for centuries. Music in particular was very important to them and, over an astonishing three centuries, many composers were beneficiaries of their patronage. We start our musical journey in the Medieval era with Guillaume Dufay who met Cosimo de’ Medici upon his arrival in Florence in 1434. We then acknowledge the early Renaissance with Alexander Agricola and Heinrich Isaac, both of whom composed for the court of Lorenzo de' Medici in the late 15th century.
From the 16th century, we'll be singing music by Luca Marenzio who worked for Ferdinando de' Medici; Francesco Corteccia, one of the earliest Italian madrigalists; and Maddalena Casulana, whose four-voice madrigals were self-published and dedicated to Isabella de' Medici. Finally, we will enjoy a madrigal by Alessandro Striggio, perhaps more famous for his visit to England and the subsequent influence on Tallis' forty-part motet Spem in alium.
The breadth of music in this Early Nights season is testament to the legacy of the great Medici family, and a reminder of how important support of music and the arts is, especially in times of trouble.
