Día De Los Muertos/Day of the Dead Community Altar Exhibit & Celebration

allgo invites all Queer and Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and those who love us to join us on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024 from 6 PM to 8 PM CST in the Community Courtyard at allgo (701 Tillery St, Austin, TX 78702) for our Annual Day of the Dead Community Altar Exhibit & Celebration.

Partake in a delicious and free hot meal, connect with other QTBIPOC folks and allies, have our guest artist performances move and inspire you as we welcome, reconnect with and honor our loved ones and ancestors at our community altar.

Since our humble beginnings, our Día de los Muertos event is one way in which allgo has offered to support our communities coping with this inevitable and absolute life cycle. As a cultural arts program, allgo initially revived this event to bring attention to the plight of the community; namely that the HIV epidemic and so many other health, economic, and political disparities created and maintained by oppressive systems prevalent and remain so in our society had led to the untimely deaths of many of our loved ones. It was also done to recognize that death and dying should not be a taboo subject and can remind us that death is another phase in the journey of life.

This community sanctioned space is not a grim or somber occasion, instead, it is a warm and neighborly encounter full of cultural energy and symbolism where we can share time and space together. Today, we continue to honor this cultural and artistic tradition by preparing an altar with offerings to our dearly departed. Pan de muerto, small candies, incense, roses, candles, marigolds, skulls, fruit, water, pictures and memorabilia from the community (please feel free to bring your own items or whatever you hold in your heart).
