Join us to get the rich and warming tones of chestnut in the city centre of Birmingham!
About this Event

Harvesting of chestnut takes place between October and December. The fruit of the chestnut tree is edible and the husks can be used for dyeing. You can get the rich and warming tones of chestnut and a scarf through the workshop. We will also provide a chestnuts hot drink to fuel your creativity. Come to join us in the city centre of Birmingham!

About the workshop

The workshop is approximately 2 hours. You will be guided on natural dye techniques step by step and it is friendly for the beginner. The tutor will also teach you how to make beautiful and unique tie dye patterns on your scarf! All materials are provided. To explore the beauty of natural colours, the tutor will bring a vintage artbook in the 1960s with textile samples that you can see and touch.


The workshop is a perfect opportunity to create with nature to make a seasonal colour and meet some new friends! The tutor will prepare hot drink and snacks for you!

Hypatia Huang is a PhD candidate in Cultural Heritage at the University of Birmingham who is interested in exploring the art of dyeing which has regarded as an intangible cultural heritage. She has visited villages of ethnic groups in China to explore how the ethnic group people in China record their history on the indigo fabric. Alongside her cultural study, she also experiments with developing natural dye on different natural materials.
