Join 3 Lawrence-area gardeners/artists for a presentation on plants to grow for use as natural dyes. Included will be discussions on what plants are easy to start from seed and thrive with little water and attention to which provide most generous blooms and dye potential. Information on harvesting and storing the plant material will also be shared. Examples of various d yes from the garden on fiber will be present. Bring your curiosity and excitement about capturing the beautiful gift of color from plants you can grow in your own garden!Presenters:
Liz Bonny is a weaver, dyer, spinner, fiber processer, and hand sewer located in Lawrence, KS. She loves to experiment with and teach process, using local and thrifted materials. Liz is passionate about her fiber community, serving as the president of the Kaw Valley Fiber Guild, and outreach coordinator and past president of the Kaw Point Fibershed.
Kim Comstock lives and teaches natural dye workshops in the Lawrence, KS community. After using kitchen scraps and foraged walnuts to dye bits of cloth in 2018, learning about dyes and fiber became a passion. Kim’s practice includes tending a native plant and dye garden, mindful foraging, and using natural dyes to relate to season, place, and systems. She is also growing flax and building knowledge about bast fiber processing in the hopes that local cloth will be part of our future.
Denise Kester grows dye plants and flax in her north Lawrence garden and is fascinated with the idea of what can be grown and dyed in one's own back yard, with minimal equipment.
