About this Event

WORKSHOP DATES:

JULY 19 / JULY 26 / AUG 2 / AUG 9 / AUG 16 / AUG 23 (11am-1pm)

Co-taught by natural dyes devotee Eric Guy and queer quilter Eliza Fernand

This workshop series introduces the curious textile artist to the world of harnessing natural color. Using a variety of dye materials and techniques, together we will prep, transform, and stitch upcycled textiles into one-of-a-kind quilted art books.

Week 1 - learn about fabric types, mordants, and test an iron bath

Week 2 - pull directly from the garden for eco-printing and flower pounding

Week 3 - practice bundle-dye steaming techniques with food scraps

Week 4 - explore indigo with fresh leaf and vats using resist and shibori

Week 5 - review the outcomes and begin assembling fabric into quilt books

Week 6 - embellish and finish quilted fabric books for a share out

Everyone will be able to leave with scraps and samples to keep working with at home. We will provide a dye journal and hand-out instructions and references for each technique.

Three of the sessions (1,5,6) will be at Interfacing Studio, located in a second-story walk-up, with no elevator. The other three sessions (2,3,4) will be in Eric's garden in Albany Park. Class order might be switched if there is a weather event on our garden day. All materials are provided for this class, but you are welcome to bring an old garment or bedding to cut up and use for scraps.

Registration for this class includes the six sessions. Life happens and you might not make all of them- if you are unable to make it to any sessions you registered for, the class fee remains the same and you will receive all hand-out instructions and references. Masking is required and KN95 masks are provided if you forget yours. Please arrive on time or a little early, we have a lot to share and will be starting at eleven.
