Join publisher Dust Collective and the artists behind their two most recent books: Barbara Bosworth's Some Lights Are From Fires and S. Billie Mandle’s Circumference. A book signing will follow the artist talk, with a selection of Dust Collective's backlist available for purchase.Founded by Emily Sheffer in 2017, Dust Collective publishes handmade and small-edition photography books that are skillfully printed and crafted by hand in New England. Each book shows a close attention to material and detail, and embraces the beauty of the printed image. Dust Collective books are held in many libraries and museums including The New York Public Library, The International Center of Photography & The Harvard Fine Arts Library. Barbara Bosworth's Some Lights Are From Fires is a memorial piece for Bosworth’s brother that weaves a visual narrative of love, loss, family, and the struggle of a life lived in the shadows. Hands, silhouettes, water, and fire reveal an elemental familial bond and confront the finality of loss. Circumference by S. Billie Mandle is a meditation on the light and atmosphere that imbue the corner of Emily Dickinson's bedroom where she wrote her poems. This book contemplates the spirit that lingers in a single place.
About the Artists:
Barbara Bosworth is a photographer whose large-format images explore both overt and subtle relationships between humans and the natural world. Whether chronicling the efforts of hunters or bird-banders or evoking the seasonal changes that transform mountains and meadows, Bosworth’s caring attention to the world around her results in images that inspire viewers to look closely. Bosworth grew up in Novelty, Ohio. She currently lives in Massachusetts, where she is a professor emeritus of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston.
S. Billie Mandle is from Northern California and works in Massachusetts. She is an Associate Professor of photography at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and received her BA in biology from Williams College and an MFA from MassArt. Her quiet, attentive images engage with themes of place and contingency. She has photographed subjects such as Catholic confessionals and burned forests in California as well as domestic architecture. Her work has been widely exhibited, including shows at the Addison Gallery of American Art (Andover, MA), the Hyères Photography Festival (France), and Garden (Los Angeles, CA). Her projects have been supported by a NYFA Fellowship, a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship, and a grant from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. Her work has been featured in publications such as Aperture, Cabinet, and Wired.
