The beautiful, ethereal 1947 Requiem by French composer Maurice Duruflé is his best-known piece, and one of the finest works in the choral repertoire. Blending Gregorian chant with the rich harmonies of French impressionistic music, this free-flowing, luscious Requiem is an unforgettable musical experience that speaks to the soul.
The concert also offers an unmissable orchestral treat – a performance of Sir Edward Elgar’s beloved Enigma Variations, whose 14 short musical portraits include the supremely emotional ‘Nimrod’. Complementing this musical feast are Joseph Haydn’s sparkling 18th century choral motet, Insanae et Vanae Curae, and Lili Boulanger’s 1917 Vieille Prière Bouddhique (Old Buddhist Prayer), a richly dramatic piece filled with exotic mysticism.
Appearing alongside the 150 voices of Worcester Festival Choral Society will be internationally acclaimed soloists and the superb Meridian Sinfonia orchestra. Conducted by director of music Samuel Hudson, the concert’s magnificent Worcester Cathedral setting adds the perfect finishing touch.
