About this Event
Don't Miss Duo Aequalis at Scholes Street Studios!
Luminaries showcases virtuoso contemporary duo repertoire and deals with the concept of legacy. The word “Luminary” has two main meanings: people of prominence or achievement, and light emitting bodies, especially celestial ones like the sun and moon. In this program we showcase music by widely celebrated composers like Johnathan Harvey and Jeffrey Mumford, and revive the nearly-forgotten music of Diana McIntosh, whose namesake work inspired the program. McIntosh explores a huge range of harmonic and timbral environments heard also in Larcher and Mellits, as well as virtuoso passages that appear in the works of Shrude and Wubbels. Despite her relative obscurity, McIntosh’s significant contribution to the flute and piano repertoire speaks for itself. We suggest that the popular success of certain composers over others does not necessarily reflect the quality of their work, but has more to say about their particular circumstances and the priorities of our musical industry.
Duo Aequalis is a flute and piano duo comprised of Shannon Lotti (fl.) and Stephen Eckert (pf.) based in Bowling Green, OH. Specializing in the virtuoso repertoire of the past fifty years, Duo Aequalis has performed across the Midwest in venues like Northwestern University, College of Wooster, the Chicago Flute Club, and the Toledo Museum of Art. The duo has appeared on concert series including the Simpson Garden Park Brown Bag Series and Temple Shomer Emunim’s Concert Series and at competitions such as the Central Ohio Flute Association and Cincinnati Flute Society Young Artist Competitions. The duo was awarded best student presentation at the College Music Society Great Lakes Conference and served as faculty for the BGSU Flute Summer Music Institute. Duo Aequalis’ upcoming performance season features recital performances in major centres like Chicago (Constellation Frequency Series), New York City (Scholes Street Studio), Dallas, and in venues across the Midwest.
