Duncan Coker thrives on the distance between himself and the characters who narrate his songs. This creative space allows him to step into the shoes of a long-haul trucker, a cowboy, or a young dreamer chasing a Nashville music career. He revisits past decades, adopts accents, or transports himself to another corner of the continent—all in service of the story. For Coker, songwriting is the art of channeling real emotions through the lens of fiction. Every character is a reflection of its author, yet imagined in a different multiverse.
Despite his storytelling flair, Coker’s songs are deeply rooted in real life. He’s a keen observer of humanity, constantly attuned to the subtle “signals in the noise.” A true stenographer of the human condition, he might even be spotted in the dairy aisle, thumb-typing an overheard phrase into his phone for future lyrics. His songs wrestle with life's profound realities—grappling with the loss of his father, the love he shares with his wife Julie, or the everyday puzzle of distilling big emotions into concise, rhyming verses.
Born in the lowlands of South Carolina and raised in New Jersey, Coker first found his voice as a standout soprano in his church choir. But when his voice dropped, he left the pews and found solace in a friend’s garage, cranking up his Fender Squier. Growing up in Jersey, Springsteen’s blue-collar ballads felt too close to home, so he turned to the progressive sounds of Floyd, Zeppelin, Yes, and Rush on WNEW 102.7. To this day, those timeless chords evoke memories of his childhood bedroom—radio blaring, guitar in hand, windows open to the river running behind his rustic cedar-shake home.
Coker’s self-titled debut album is the result of years of dedication to his craft. Living in Boulder, Colorado, he honed his skills in local coffee houses and songwriting circles, showing up weekly with fresh material and a willingness to grow through feedback from his peers. The camaraderie and accountability of this community proved vital to his evolution as an artist. Now in his mid-50s, Coker embraces the idea of “blooming late,” bringing a lifetime of experiences into his music—weathering heartbreaks, raising teenagers, and cultivating gardens. Like late-harvest grapes, his music is richer for the wait.
Every track on his debut album was written in the past year, making it a snapshot of this chapter in his life. The album’s overarching theme is connection—building bridges between past and present, between people, and from his heart to the listener. This is most poignantly expressed in lyrics like, “Wish I could build a bridge to places that are gone,” and in the song “Carried Away,” which explores the chaos of conflict and reconciliation. Featuring collaborations with local talents such as Carolyn Hunter (Dan Rodriguez) and Charlie Rose (Elephant Revival), the album showcases Coker’s gift for evocative storytelling.
Duncan Coker performs at clubs, venues, and festivals across the West. He has opened for nationally touring acts like The Takes, appeared on KRFC Fort Collins and KBCO Boulder, and headlined Denver’s iconic Larimer Lounge with his band. With his second album slated for release in 2025, Coker continues to expand his artistry while bridging the gaps between life, music, and his audience.

The Black Buzzard at Oskar Blues Denver is a music venue born out of a drink and a conversation about the old Denver music scene. Created by Kellner Schoenke at their Longmont restaurant, The Black Buzzard drink fused bacon-infused bourbon and ten fidy imperial stout. Chef and Oskar Blues fooderies partner, Jason Rogers, shared a sip with Kellner, and they realized they had both frequented the same closed blues bar on 16th and Market Street, Brendan's. Years later, Brendan's became available, and it seemed like the perfect time to put some music back into the heart of LoDo. They named the venue after the drink that started it all. Today, located blocks away from Coors Field and Union Station, The Black Buzzard at Oskar Blues Denver hosts buzz-worthy musicians of all genres from Denver and beyond.
