45th Anniversary Screening! Join Dumpster Raccoon Cinema for the DISCO MUSICAL SPECTACULAR film that LAUNCHED THE RAZZIES – the rocking story of the Village People, CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC!
Songwriter Jack Morelli (an adorable Steve Guttenberg) is sick of his dead-end, abusive job – so he quits to pursue his dream of serving up smash disco hits! There’s only one problem: he needs a GROUP outrageous enough to match the out-there East Village sound he’s seeking! So begins the hunt for THE VILLAGE PEOPLE – a super-troupe assemblage of 1970s New York’s most outré personalities and costumes who can capture the bombastic queer zeitgeist and deliver the pulse-pounding performances that will light a nation on fire! Can they find the fame and distribution they seek – or will the square establishment (personified, among others, by a stick-in-the-mud Caitlyn Jenner dating an exhausted Valerie Perrine!) keep them down???
Released at the EXACT WRONG TIME as an anti-queer, Reaganite America turned on the disco scene and its denizens, CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC was an incredible flop, released to hostile audiences and garnering (along with Dumpster Raccoon’s celebrated XANADU!) the first ever Razzie Award. But neither time (nor the zombified afterlife of the band’s captured Trump-era IP) can dampen the film’s frenetic, dopey, and catchy charm, as the film delivers bop after bop from the band’s catalogue amid some of the zaniest sequences ever made into a musical!
