This month's presentation:
Duluth 101: Duluth’s Climate; Past, Present, and Future
Duluth’s climate ain’t what it used to be. Or is it? After all, today, we’re a “climate refuge” city. Or are we?! And what’s with all the extremes: big flood events, record snows one year, brown winter the next? What is normal—or is there even such a thing as normal Duluth weather anymore? Come to think of it, what’s the difference between “weather” and “climate” anyway? Join Kenny Blumenfeld, Senior Climatologist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, for a measured and spirited look at what the science is telling us: about Duluth’s weather history, how our climate is trending at present, and what we may expect down the road. Oh, and along the way, learn new fascinating new cocktail party words…like “albedo!”
About our presenter:
Dr. Kenneth “Kenny" Blumenfeld is a climate scientist who grew up in Minnesota with a love for storms, blizzards, and being outside. As a Senior Climatologist, he works in the Minnesota State Climatology Office (DNR), where he provides the state’s agencies, communities, and citizens with up-to-date scientific information about Minnesota’s changing and variable climate. Kenny enjoys talking to Minnesotans about their weather, and often does it long after the workday is done. He is a year-round bicycle commuter who also likes hiking, camping, and sharing modest adventures with his wife and his two young-adult sons.
