📚 Talk: "Dueling's Not Dead: How Honor Culture Shapes Our Everyday Life"
🎤 Speaker: Aaron L. Pomerantz, Ph.D., a social psychologist and the Assistant Director of Research and Evaluation at Rice University’s Doerr Institute for New Leaders
When you hear "honor," you might picture duels at dawn, powdered wigs, or a scene from Hamilton. But the urge to defend your name and never back down is not just history. It is alive in bar arguments, family blowups, Twitter fights, and politics.
In this talk, Rice University social psychologist Aaron Pomerantz reveals how honor quietly cuts across class, education, politics, religion, and geography to shape our everyday lives in surprising and powerful ways.
Through real stories and surprising studies, he will explore:
- What honor looks like today and why so many people recognize themselves in its norms, beliefs, and values.
- How honor travels far beyond its regional roots to shape communities across the country.
- Why honor drives everything from arguments and homicide to vaccine hesitancy, mental health stigma, risk-taking, police brutality, and political leadership.
Even if the idea of a duel makes you cringe, exploring honor will help you see the hidden rules shaping how people argue, react, lead, and live. And it might even reveal more about yourself than you expect.
