On Friday 23 October, Dub Me Always is pleased to present the return of the mighty Moa Anbessa International, playing original vintage roots reggae vinyl and unknown dub plates, with Man Fi Bill and Wolfman at the controls, alongside the night’s regular host, DJ David Katz. This Friday night special is the official afterparty for the premiere screening of the Diane Jobson documentary Miss Jobson, showing in Screen Two at 7pm. The afterparty will run from 9pm to 1am, with free entry all night, so come early and stay late!
Launched in Battersea in 1977 by former members of Lord David’s sound system, Moa Anbessa was the first Rastafari-oriented sound system in Britain. Within a year they were rated among the top four sound systems in the land, clashing with heavyweights such as Sir Coxsone Outernational, Fatman, Jah Shaka and many more, often triumphing and always holding their own. The sound enjoyed residencies at Club Norreik, the Four Aces and Studio 200, and regularly appeared at venues such as the Bouncing Ball, the Georgian Club, Phoebe’s, Cubie’s, Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton, Battersea Town Hall and Acton Town Hall, among many others, and after playing against other sounds in cities across the country, in the early 1980s they played in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. In the same era the crew began issuing material on the Moa Anbessa label by the likes of Delton Screechie, Kojak & Liza, Early B, George Nooks, and the Creation Steppers, as well as King Tubby, Papa Tullo, Nicodeemus and Johnny Ringo. They also collaborated with Prince Jazzbo, Augustus Pablo, Junior Delgado, Black Uhuru, Trinity, Sly and Robbie, Earl 16, Barrington Levy, Jah Thomas and King Everald. For our Friday night special on 23 October, founding members Man Fi Bill and Wolfman will be at the controls playing an exquisite selection of vintage roots reggae and original dub plates, 9pm-1am, with plenty of Wailers and related associates.
MISS JOBSON is an intimate portrait of the Rastafarian icon Diane Jobson, Bob Marley’s close friend and attorney. Now in her 80s, Diane confronts the passage of time and her legacy as a defender of the defenceless with a dry sense of humour and unflinching honesty.
London Breeze Film Festival is proud to present the UK premiere of Amanda Sans Pantling’s latest film – a documentary portrait of the formidable Diane Jobson, stunningly shot in Jamaica. The director will join us on stage following the screening to talk about her work and the experience of making her latest film. Come early as there will be a pop-up exhibition from our friends at Black Cultural Archive of photographs and artefacts of Bob Marley’s time in London.
In the 1970s, Diane Jobson made a name for herself as Bob Marley's close friend and lawyer, converting to Rastafarianism under his influence. After his death, she dedicated her career to defending Jamaica's poorest communities, becoming the island's beloved “Rasta lawyer.” Now 80, the fiercely stubborn attorney with 12-foot-long locks still works without a computer, taking handwritten notes and helping clients facing police violence and murder charges. To cope with her demanding work, Diane finds a sense of peace through her spiritual connection with Jamaica's nature and her sprawling conversations with her close friend Sally Henzell about aging, love and purpose.
Showing in Screen 2 at the Ritzy at 7pm the documentary MISS JOBSON captures both rhythms of Diane Jobson’s life through intimate character-driven scenes—as she visits Jamaica’s ghettos, fields calls from clients, swims with her dog, and smokes ganja with Sally. The two friends maintain a powerful zest for life and sense of mischievousness, ziplining through the jungle and road tripping in a vintage convertible. Diane’s enduring connection to Bob Marley’s legacy comes full circle when she visits his children, who still see her as their beloved auntie. Blending humour and profundity, the film ultimately celebrates a woman who has lived entirely on her own terms.
The Miss Jobson afterparty has free entry all night! Come Upstairs directly after the screening to dance the night away, with a prime selection of tracks related to the film and its themes!
