On Wednesday 12 March, Dub Me Always is delighted to present a night of original reggae vinyl when guest selector Don Letts the Rebel Dread joins host DJ David Katz on the decks. An esteemed film director, performer and disc jockey, Letts was born in London to Jamaican parents, his father running the Superstonic Sound System. During the mid-1970s, Letts introduced punk audiences to dub reggae in clothing store Acme Attractions and through his DJ sets at the Roxy. A friend to many leading lights of the punk movement, as well as Bob Marley, Letts began directing music videos for the Clash in 1977 and managed the Slits for a time. He directed The Punk Movie, released in 1978, and travelled to Jamaica with John Lydon the same year, helping acts such as I Roy and Tappa Zuki to sign to Virgin’s Frontline label. Letts also made a record with Keith Levene and Jah Wobble that year and co-founded Big Audio Dynamite in 1984. His 1997 feature film Dancehall Queen, co-directed by Rick Elgood, was critically acclaimed and after the Grammy-winning Clash documentary Westway To The World in 2003 he has since made documentaries on Gil Scott-Heron, Sun Ra and George Clinton, among others, and has presented the weekly Culture Clash Radio show on BBC Six Music since 2009. His first autobiography Culture Clash: Dread Meets Punk Rockers was released in 2007 and more recently the tale was updated for Dread And Black Again. He was also the subject of the 2010 documentary Superstonic Sound: The Rebel Dread. A favourite of festival stages around the world, Don has presided over several acclaimed compilations including Dream Meets the Punk Rockers Uptown, The Mighty Trojan Sound, Dread Meets Greensleeves: A Westside Revolution, Dread Meets Yasushie Ide: In the Land of the Rising Dub and Version Excursion: Late Night Tales. Don’s solo album Outta Sync was produced by Gaudi in 2023. More recently, he's been doing remixes for various artists, including Damian Marley and Seun Kuti.
What will Don pull out of the bag on the night? There’s only one way to find out…expect a range of reggae classics and some less familiar curveballs when the Rebel Dread hits Brixton!
