Explore the intaglio process of drypoint on our 3 hour taster session.
Drypoint etching is a printing process where lines or marks are scratched or inscribed into a surface which is then printed from. It is usually by the intaglio method, where the incisions are filled with ink and printed from, rather than the relief method which prints from the surface. On this taster session you will make a series of prints using the drypoint technique. You will learn how to use drypoint etching tools on plastic and aluminium sheets, oil based inks and our two etching printing presses in the workshop. At the end of the session you will have a series of similar, but increasingly more complex, prints.
What experience do I need?
This workshop is suitable for an absolute beginner or someone who has some previous experience but would like a refresher of the process.
What will I make?
You will make a series of progressively different prints using A5 or A6 printing plates, printed onto A4 or A5 paper. Expect to come away with an edition of up to 10 drypoint prints.
Who is my tutor?
This course is taught by Mick Welbourn and Joanna Wilkinson.
Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work. Joanna has recently completed an MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University and is also a Co-operative Member of Leeds Print Workshop.
Mick Welbourn is currently the manager of the printmaking workshops at Leeds Arts University, where he has worked for more than twenty years. Over the years he has taught printmaking to adults as well as to A level, Foundation, Degree and Masters students.
Do I need to bring anything?
All equipment and materials will be provided. This includes cartridge papers, plastic or aluminium printing plates, oil based inks, tissue paper and newsprint paper. You are advised to bring a portfolio folder along if you have one so you can carry your prints home. We also sell A3 plastic portfolio folders for just £3 if you wish to buy one from us.
If I can't attend can I get a refund?
We will refund you if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after this time no refunds will be issued. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non refundable. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website.
What if the course is cancelled?
We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.
Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
