Our second and final weekend kicks off early at the old Royal High, transformed for our festival.
It’s a female-fronted line up on the outdoor stage with spoken word post-punk outfit Dry Cleaning, sunny pop purveyors Girl Ray and feminist post-punk band M(h)aol. Indoors, electro-punk solo artist Lonelady is joined by The Bug Club, Future Get Down and Buffet Lunch.
The basement is being taken over by women and non-binary DJ collective SISU, with sets from CRPNTR, Tzusan, Elsa, Ex.sess, Malissa and Airali.
There’s more music in the Central Chamber with a performance from genre-breaking harpists Clouds Harp Quartet. Collective Endeavours then take over the space with their dance and music improv, before tonight’s creative collaboration from Florence Richardson fills the chamber with music and visions from the school’s past.
The theatre programme sees tragi-comic multimedia performance The Great Pretender, Sweætshops exploring the social repercussions of the witch trials, and drag act Mystika Glamoor take to the Pianodrome.
If it’s theatre duo SALTYDOLLS or dancer Alan Greig you’ve come to see, you’ll have to go exploring among the visual art to find their shifting performances.
>> About Hidden Door <<
We open up forgotten urban spaces for the public to explore and discover incredible music, art, theatre, film, dance, spoken word and more.
Through our festivals we reveal hidden parts of the city and showcase new and emerging artists, musicians, theatre and film makers.
Hidden Door is a volunteer-run charity, with our work funded through ticket sales, sponsorship and fundraising. All money goes straight back into the festival and paying our creative contributors.
>> Hidden Door 2022 <<
This year, we’re bringing the old Royal High School on Calton Hill to life for a ten day festival of live music, visual art, dance, theatre and spoken word.
The buildings, mostly silent since the school closed in the 1960s, will be used to celebrate Scotland’s exciting new and emerging creative talent, before work begins to transform it into Scotland’s new National Centre for Music.
The festival will completely transform the entire complex from 9 – 18 June 2022.
