If you can say it, you can play it” … These are the famous words of Jaqui’s first drum teacher, Babatunde Olatunji, and also the foundation for all of her drum classes. In the Drum For Joy!™ classes you will learn the language of the drum, basic hand drum technique and how to make your drum sing. Jaqui presents the drum songs in a way that make it fun and easy to learn. By building and playing drum compositions in all of their parts, you will experience the magic of music making and the joy of drumming! All levels of experience are welcome. Jaqui specializes in djembe drumming, but other hand drums are welcome, (ashikos, bougaraboos, congas, etc.). Recording and note taking are welcome and encouraged. Participants are asked to bring their drums to class with them. Drums are also available to borrow in class.
WE HOPE YOU CAN JOIN US!
A little about Jaqui ...
Jaqui MacMillan believes that healing happens through art and music. She discovered her passion for African drumming in the early 1980's while earning her degrees in Graphic and Fine
Art at the University of Maryland. Over a span of 15 years, she studied with many masters, including Babatunde Olatunji, Mamady Keita, Sam Turner and at the Tam Tam Mandingue School in Washington, DC with Mahiri Fadjimba Keita. As an award winning percussionist, she performed and recorded with some of the top names in the business and began sharing her joy of drumming with others. Jaqui has taught privately and given workshops throughout the USA for over 30 years through her program, Drum For Joy!™. Her studies continued in 1999 and 2001 in Hawaii with Arthur Hull, where she studied drum circle facilitation and completed the mentor training. She is a founding member of DCFG, (the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild) and has facilitated thousands of drum circles for a variety of populations. For more info see her website at www.DrumForJoy.com
