Mikhail Segal is a Russian film director, screenwriter, and writer known for his diverse creative work in cinema and literature. Segal began his artistic journey in theatre as a schoolboy, and later studied directing at the Oryol Institute of Culture before moving into filmmaking. His first feature film, Franz + Polina (2006), premiered at the Moscow International Film Festival and brought him international recognition. Since then, he has written and directed a range of films, including Short Stories (2012), A Film About Alexeev (2014), Elephants Can Play Football (2018), and Deeper! (2020). Segal has also served on juries at international film festivals and worked in music videos and advertising earlier in his career.
Alongside his filmmaking, Segal is an established prose writer. His literary works include Youth, Short Stories, and Pocherk, and his writing is frequently characterised by sharp observation, irony, and social reflection—qualities that often connect his literary and cinematic projects. His latest book, Humane Farewell (2024), continues this exploration of contemporary life and human relationships.
