Join us for a day of explorative movement and storytelling!
In 2016, Amy Han - local author, creative writing teacher, and parkour practitioner - dreamed up a workshop to bring her love of words and movement together. She had been writing for as long as she could remember; she discovered art du déplacement (parkour) in her 20s. The more she dove (literally) into this playful and challenging movement practice, the more parallels she found between the creative and developmental processes involved in breaking a jump, finding a way through obstacles, and writing stories.
Enter Movement & Storytelling: a workshop originally developed for kids (but requested by adults from the get-go!). M&S brought together those who loved to move and were curious about creative writing and storytelling, and those who were already experienced writers who were curious about movement and new ways to approach their ideas. Together, they learned basic parkour and storytelling techniques:
How to tell a story with their bodies, hearts, imaginations, and words.
It’s been a few years since the last M&S workshop, and we are excited to bring you D(R)EAM: Movement & Storytelling (M&S 2.0!). Amy will bring the storytelling elements. Dean - Fighting Monkey instructor, parkour coach, and playful human - will bring the complementary creative movement and games.
Our D(R)EAM is to light you up in the new year in body, mind, and spirit. Fuel your creative soul. Spark connections through your nimble limbs. Find the story your body (and/or inner child!) longs to tell, and let your imagination carry you through narrative and physical parcours.
Curious? Let’s make stories and move together!
What to expect:
+ Creative writing prompts and story construction techniques
+ Creative movement situations, problem-solving, and games
+ Beginner-friendly Parkour-inspired movement vocabulary
+ Introduction to the moving choreography of story
+ Safe space to share/perform your story (optional but highly encouraged!)
+ More: dance, fun, laughter, and inspiration!
D(R)EAM is suitable for all levels of experience and ability (in movement and/writing and storytelling). No matter where you're at, you are welcome and will be in safe hands here! If you have the curiosity, it's for you 😊 Earlybird tickets until 1st Feb 2025.
About your hosts:
Amy Han is a writer and the founder of Words of a Feather, a creative writing studio for writers of all ages. A former instructor with Melbourne Parkour and the Australian Parkour Association, she has trained with the founders of parkour/ADD in Paris, and with several parkour communities around the world. As someone who didn’t grow up ‘sporty’, parkour helped her connect with her body, her physical abilities, and her courage. It also taught her important lessons about how to navigate challenges in all areas of life. For Amy, there is so much crossover in her movement and writing life that she can hardly imagine doing one without the other. She writes as she moves and moves as she writes. It’s all creative. It’s all life exploration. Her latest novel, The Yard Sale at Story House, was published in January 2024.
Dean Philp is a play provocateur and the founder of Moving Puzzles, a facilitation service for leadership, innovation and wellbeing. During his 10+ years coaching sports teams, Dean loves the deep connection among players who share a common goal. Meanwhile, as an Artificial Intelligence researcher, he realised that goals are stories about the future! Later he became a Fighting Monkey instructor, learning that stories about the future depend on the games we play today. Stories and play go together! As a Parkour coach, Dean loves to help people with creativity, which he sees as little stories played around obstacles. Today he uses Moving Puzzles to focus his sport, art, science and Parkour into helping humans solve complex problems through play.
