At SSCA we use Riley Method as a springboard for students to develop rhythmical and gestural figure drawings, finely rendered in an academic style. We use Riley Method to place the main volumes of the human body and interconnect them with rhythms. This method not only deals with outline, but partially with anatomy and the figure in motion. This creates a vital, lively impression of a naturalistic figure.
To achieve a realistic impression the students construct the figure using riley method, we “mannequinise” in the initial stages, this places each volume and from there we precisely apply more characterful features. We address tone and shadow mapping, we lay the most descriptive shapes and then bring the drawing to render. Through our methods of drawing, students progress from structure, simple outlines, to drawing from their newly gained knowledge of anatomy. This is to produce realistic proportions and a sense of weight and balance. After this, students key the correct value structures, they use edge quality, group light and shadow families, all to imply the form of the figure.

Students gain an introduction to the academic method of figure drawing, used by the major Realist ateliers of 19th century. Best exemplified the French and Russian Academic tradition.
Anatomical tuition will give an overview of specific pieces of the human body and how they directly translate to our figurative drawing practice. The goal with our anatomy lectures is for you to use the figure as a reference point for your knowledge, develop realistic drawings without extensive time with the figure.
From the second week through the end of the course, they work from the live model everyday for 2 hours per session on a long pose, using graphite and working on paper. Students receive regular individual critiques to help guide them toward a fully resolved and accurate drawing from their instructor.

Key learning objectives:

The application of knowledge in representing the anatomy of the human figure
How to use a complex “shadow map”, illustrating how light is cast across the form of the figure
How to illustrate a realistically proportioned human figure
Skill in representing the subtle variation in forms from pose to pose
How to apply a knowledge of edge quality, its range of sharpness to softness
Create a sense of form turning
Record gesture, structure, anatomy, balance and weight
Create a realistic impression of light flowing over the form
