About this Event
Join us for a unique and immersive drawing session, where we’ll explore the spontaneous world of psychic automatism, inspired by the natural beauty of Dallas parks. This in-person event invites you to connect with nature and unlock your inner creativity in a natural setting. No prior artistic experience is needed—just bring your curiosity and an open mind.
Funded by the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture’s Arts Activate Grant, Drawing Session: Channeling Dallas Parks with Psychic Automatism is a free, community-driven art series designed to make creative expression more accessible to everyone. From March to April 2025, these sessions will take place across Dallas parks, with a focus on underserved neighborhoods.
Participants aged 18 and up will draw with graphite, charcoal, and oil pastels to create 12 drawings. Guided by the Surrealist technique of psychic automatism and accompanied by music, you’ll tap into your emotions and intuition, allowing creativity to flow freely without the constraints of logic or preconception.
Whether you’re an experienced artist or new to creative expression, this event offers a rare opportunity to break free from creative barriers. Surrounded by nature and music, you’ll leave with a collection of personal artworks and a newfound connection to the arts, nature, and the Dallas community.
Spaces are limited, so reserve your spot on eventbrite today for this empowering art experience!
What is Psychic Automatism?
Psychic automatism also known as automatic drawing is a creative process often associated with the Surrealist movement. It involves producing art without conscious thought, allowing the subconscious mind to guide the creation.
This technique aims to bypass rational control and tap into deeper, often hidden layers of the mind. It can be used in various forms of art, including drawing, painting, writing, and other creative expressions.
The term was first defined by André Breton, a French poet and one of the leading figures of Surrealism, in his “Manifesto of Surrealism” in 1924. Breton described psychic automatism
as a way of expressing the true functioning of thought, free from the constraints of reason, morality, or aesthetic concerns.
About the artist
Jessica Baldivieso
Creator and instructor of Drawing Session: Channeling Dallas Parks with Psychic Automatism
Jessica Baldivieso is a Bolivian-born artist based in Dallas, Texas, whose work spans painting, installation, and community engagement.
Her upbringing was shaped by her education at the German School in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where she learned German as a child. At 17, she traveled to Germany for six months, living with a German family and attending school. This experience deeply inspired her desire to pursue art and captivated her interest in architecture, particularly the Gothic beauty of the Kölner Dom and the vibrant city of Cologne.
Baldivieso holds degrees in Painting and Architecture from the University of Arkansas, where she honed her practice focused on abstraction. Since relocating to Dallas in 2019, she has become an active participant in the Bolivian and Texan art scene.
Over the past six years, Jessica has held six solo exhibitions. Her monumental 2022 installation, icon, was exhibited at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center and later at the Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Council. That same year, she debuted *Inverted Intuition*, a semi-permanent installation at Ro2 Gallery.
Additionally, Baldivieso has collaborated with institutions such as the Meadows Museum and The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, where she has led workshops, artist talks, and community-focused art-making sessions, continuing her commitment to fostering creativity and public engagement through her work.
