Drawing Portraits in Charcoal

Discover the power of charcoal in this portrait workshop! 

You'll create two A4 portraits from a live model, exploring both reductive charcoal drawing—focused on tone and atmosphere—and traditional charcoal sketching with expressive lines and marks. 

Each 40-minute session will sharpen your technique, boost your confidence, and expand your expressive range.

The workshop is suitable for students at any level. 

About the tutor:

Marcin is a Polish visual artist specialising in figurative sculpture, painting, and drawing. He began his training at the Kenar Artistic High School in Zakopane and later earned an MA in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Skilled in a wide range of materials—from wood, bronze, and ceramic to stone, resins, and plaster—he has created numerous large-scale works exhibited internationally.

Marcin’s practice reflects a deep fascination with the human body, exploring its form, colour, and the themes of sexuality and desire. He has further refined his drawing at the Academy of Realist Art in Edinburgh.

Since 2014, Marcin has taught untutored life drawing at Leith School of Art, and he also works as a Tutor Supports on several courses. He is a co-founder of the Naked Aye Collective (2015) and A New Primer (2022), and has worked as a gallery curator at St Margaret’s House since 2019, where he also creates in his art studio.
