About this Event

Join artist Briony Barr for an art-science-themed workshop which includes collaborative drawing and complex adaptive systems.

During this two-hour workshop, participants will draw with colourful PVC tape on the floor of our Arts Lab. No drawing experience is necessary as there will be a set of simple rules to follow. As the lines build up over time, so will the emergent patterns – a hallmark of the complex adaptive systems that have inspired the project.

Drawing on Complexity is based on a concept created by Australian artist Briony Barr and physicist Andrew Melatos – from the University of Melbourne. Previous drawing experiments have lasted from several hours to several days with groups of agents ranging from 4 to 8000. They have taken place at schools, shopping malls, galleries and science museums including The National Art School in Sydney, Museum Victoria (Scienceworks), The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea and the Santa Fe Institute in USA.

When: Wednesday 22nd March, 1-3pm

Where: Meet at the Arts Lab, Level 1, Arts & Cultural Building, (Building 159) University of Melbourne.

Cost: The workshops are free for University of Melbourne students, open and applicable to all skill levels.

Note:

  • No prior artistic skills are necessary and no tape will go in the bin. We will collaboratively undraw the tape to make a sculpture after the drawing stage.
  • Please be aware that the artwork will be created on the ground. Bring a cushion for your knees if you like and we recommend that casual, comfortable, colourful clothes to be worn. Participants will be required to remove shoes while creating artwork.
