Draupadi's Mahabharata … the epic that began with her
What if the greatest epic ever told were witnessed through her eyes?
Draupadi's Mahabharata is an Odissi dance production that reimagines the Mahabharata through the perspective of Draupadi — woman, queen, witness, and the moral conscience of the epic. From the fire of her birth to the silence that descends after the devastating war at Kurukshetra, the narrative unfolds through her lived experience, weaving personal anguish into the larger, inexorable destiny of an age.
The production traces the defining moments of her journey — the swayamvara, the fateful dice game, her humiliation in the Kuru court, the catastrophic war, and its devastating aftermath — as a continuous moral reckoning that reflects the true cost of power, pride, vengeance, and silence.
Rooted in the classical grammar of Odissi, the choreography moves seamlessly between lyrical movement, expressive abhinaya, and a strong theatrical flow. Inspired by Maharishi Vyasa's Mahabharata, the narrative is enriched by poetic contributions from Ashtavadhani Shri Balachandra Bhat (Sanskrit) and Shri Kedar Mishra (Odia), with music composed by Shri Rupak Kumar Parida and rhythm by Guru Dhaneswar Swain.
More than a tale of heroes and villains, Draupadi's Mahabharata is a profound meditation on justice, responsibility, the human cost of war, and the enduring, ever-relevant questions of dharma.
