Draping Fundamentals
About this Event
Unlock the sculptural side of fashion design at the Mood Fabrics Showroom in Ponce City Market! Draping allows you to manipulate fabric directly on a dress form, creating fluid, organic silhouettes, gathers, and structure that are nearly impossible to achieve through flat patternmaking alone. Whether you're an aspiring couture designer, a garment maker, or a creative looking to experiment, this workshop will give you the confidence to turn raw fabric into wearable art.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Master Core Draping Techniques: Learn the essentials of working on a dress form, including bias draping, creating cowl necklines, asymmetrical designs, pleats, and gathers.
- Understand Fabric Behavior: Observe how different weaves and weights react on the form, and master professional pinning and marking techniques.
- Translate Drapes into Patterns: See how to unpin, smooth out (true up), and translate a 3D draped design into a flat, usable sewing pattern.
- Hands-On Practice: Complete your own draped garment detail (such as a custom neckline or sleeve treatment) directly on a dress form.
What to Expect
- A hands-on, highly visual class led by an experienced sewing and fashion design instructor.
- Access to dress forms, muslin, fashion fabrics, pins, and marking tools inside Mood's creative showroom space.
- A completed draped sample piece to take home as a reference for future designs.
What to Bring
- Nothing required! Muslin, fashion fabrics, dress forms, pins, and tools are provided.
- Optional: Bring a fabric tape measure, fabric scissors, or a notebook if you prefer using your own tools and taking detailed notes.
