This presentation will discuss lymph drainage at the catheter exit site of a vascular access device placed in the ACF to the upper arm area. General review of the lymphatic system and potential for complications in relationship to vascular access device insertion. Overview of the cubital lymph node anatomy with a review of how these locations may vary among patients. Discussion on types of drainage that could be seen at the exit site and reasons for specific drainage. Discuss the importance of identifying these structures with real-time ultrasound visualization during pre-assessment before inserting any vascular access device.
Learning Objectives:
1. Review of the lymphatic system and potential for complications in relationship to vascular access device insertion.
2. Review of the Cubital Lymph node anatomy and the potential for variance in their location.
3. Describe how to identify potential lymph fluid drainage from a vascular access device exit site.
4. Discuss treatment options for continuous lymph drainage from a vascular access device exit site.
5. Discuss the importance of identifying these structures with real-time ultrasound visualization during pre-assessment before inserting any vascular access device.
