Dragon Boats & Talisman Wheat Weaving | A Two-Craft Full-Day Workshop

Saturday November 14th, 10-4PM

By November, the harvest is in and the light runs short. It's the season these two crafts were made for.

Spend a day at Tyee working with thread and grain. In the morning, we make Dragon Boats, a simplified version of Japanese temari balls, winding colored thread into geometric patterns around a woven core. After lunch, we turn to wheat weaving, an old harvest tradition where stalks of grain are shaped into talismans believed to carry blessing into the year ahead.

Both crafts ask for patience, not speed, which suits the season. You'll leave with pieces from each: ornaments for the tree, talismans for the shelf, or gifts from the heart for the people on your list.

No experience necessary! Some materials will be provided; a full supply list is included below. Bring your own lunch — light refreshments will be available.

Held on our 80-acre property in the Conway foothills of Skagit Valley, about 50 minutes from Seattle and Vancouver.

Workshop Details

  • Dessert or refreshments provided
  • Saturday, November 14th, 10 am to 4 pm
  • $125 per workshop

What to Bring: Thread, and hot glue will be provided

  • Scissors
  • Metric Ruler
  • Cardboard [a cereal or cracker box works well but it can't be TOO thin so choose one that is more substantial. If unsure, bring a variety to class and we'll choose the best weight.]
  • Scotch Tape
  • A variety of your favorite small beads: they must be able to fit onto a straight pin
  • Towel
  • Heavy weight: a sadiron is perfect but if you don’t have one of those, a brick or something comparable will work. You can find rocks on the land.

Please Note: We never want to cancel a workshop, and we have a 5 participant minimum in order for this workshop to take place — we'd love your help getting there. Tyee Arts is a young events space, so word of mouth means everything to us. Please share with friends and family who might want to join. If minimum enrollment isn't met, we'll let you know ~24 hours in advance and issue a full refund.
