Doctor Spangle are an instrumental psychedelic funk band from the UK. They specialise in extended space jams to journey beyond the stratosphere and touch down in strange new lands. Paradoxically both challenging and yet familiar, archetypal and avant-garde. An endless cycle of birth and rebirth.“Tabula Rasa” is the title track and name of their album released at the end of 2024 through DistroKid. It is available on CD and vinyl as well as all the streaming sites like Spotify, Apple Music, etc. The Bandcamp page will go live early in 2025.
The band runs active YouTube, Instagram and Facebook pages where captures from live gigs are regularly uploaded and gig dates announced. A website is in build stage and will go live early in 2025. They are actively gigging and seeking festival and venue dates both locally and further afield.
So, how did this ultra-talented bunch of guys meet and form one of the most exciting bands on the circuit?
The percussive foundations for Dr Spangle were laid many years ago, back in the early 90’s. Dud and Dik were members of Spanglehead, a collective of musicians that played ethnic space rock and dub on the underground festival scene, eventually playing at the Woodstock reunion gig on the legendary Yasgur’s farm site in NY in 1994. Whilst there, our guitarist joined a group of travelling acid head hippies and never returned to the UK. The band folded and the remaining members played as session musicians in various guises, often crossing paths with Stu and Mark. Sadly, our keyboard guru, Dr Spangle passed away and so did our dreams of a Spanglehead reunion. Shortly after this however, Joe came into the fold. After a casual conversation about music in a chance meeting, it became clear that we had found the missing piece of the puzzle and Doctor Spangle was formed.
How about the Eastern/Indian influences that punctuate the music? Where do they come from?
At heart, we are hippies and we want our music to reflect the values of peace love and harmony. Indian and folk music in general is, and always has been, a pervasive influence in our music. It summons the ancient spirits and reignites the tribal elements of the music. At the same time though, our music is also futuristic and spacey with technological influences. There is no contradiction though, as music is timeless.
So, what’s next for Doctor Spangle (in the psychedelic multiverse)?
To create new and exciting sonic worlds. To use interesting and evocative rhythms and textures and to reach out to people with our music.
Recordings and live playing have always been our passions and we will continue to make the music we enjoy without boundaries or restrictions. Travelling beyond the stratosphere with only Love and oneness as our guides.
