In the lead-up to the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra's performances of the complete Sibelius Symphonies, the Elder Conservatorium's Open Music Academy (OMA) is delighted to host Dr Simon Lord, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra's Director of Artistic Planning, in a very special lecture:
Sibelius: Seven Symphonies and Thirty Years of Silence
From the granite-hewn drama of the First Symphony to the mysterious, unfinished silence that followed the Seventh, Jean Sibelius reshaped what a symphony could be – then stopped writing them altogether. This lecture traces the composer's evolving symphonic language across three decades, and asks why one of the twentieth century's greatest symphonists spent his final thirty years in near-total creative silence.
