Thursday October 24 at 7 p.m. Emily Fowler Library, 502 Oakland Street, Denton TX 76201This site in the Republic of Georgia has yielded the oldest and best preserved human fossils outside of Africa, dating to 1.8 million years ago. In addition to fossils of Homo erectus, extinct animal bones and stone artifacts have been recovered, providing evidence of the Dmanisi people.
Noted archeologist Dr. Reid Ferring has been a member of the Dmanisi research team for over 25 years.
Last year Ferring spoke about the Aubrey Clovis site. His lecture, during Texas Archeology Month, is sponsored by the Denton County Historical Commission.
About the Speaker:
Reid Ferring is Professor emeritus in the Department of Geography and the Environment, University of North Texas. He earned a PhD in Archaeology at Southern Methodist University and a PhD in Geology from the University of Texas at Dallas joining UNT in 1978. His research interests include Quaternary geology and soils of North Central Texas, as well as archaeology and geology in Oklahoma, Israel, Portugal, Ukraine (Crimea) and for 30 years in the Republic of Georgia.
