Abstract: Geometric figures and symbols were not only the first art form, but the first expression of an ability in early humans for abstract thought, which - along with other behaviours such as tool-making - signalled the evolution of conscious awareness. Though appearing later as a central feature in ornamental art in early civilizations (often with dual symbolic meanings), it wasn’t until about 4000 years ago that geometry was applied as a tool of science and engineering. Geometric figures made a re-appearance as art in various early 20th century movements in what is believed to be an attempt to recover their original spiritual significance; and also as metaphors for ideas emerging during the scientific revolution of that time.
After graduating with a Ph.D in physics from the University of Hull, Kevin pursued a career in research in LASER technology for some twenty five years, and then worked in education at the University of Leicester and later at Queen Mary, University of London. He is a guest lecturer at the University of Leeds and a Ph.D supervisor at the University of Wales Trinity St David. Last year he compiled and edited the book ‘What Inspires Art?’ which features stories and art by over a hundred Lincolnshire-based artists
