Jews and Arabic Popular Music
About this Event

Jews of the Middle East and North Africa participated in all aspects of modern Arab culture and were especially prominent in the sphere of popular music. Zohra al-Fasiya (Morocco), Layla Murad (Egypt), and Saleh and Da’ud al-Kuwaiti (Iraq) were among the best known and beloved stars of mid-20th century Arabic music, and they remain popular today. Dr. Joel Beinin will discuss these luminaries and others and how the role of Jews in Arabic musical culture was transformed by the transition of Arab countries from European colonies to independent states and the establishment of the State of Israel. Dr. Beinin is the Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History and Professor of Middle East History, Emeritus at Stanford University.
