Long before the COVID-19 pandemic began, racism was effecting the health of Black people and other people of color. And Harvard public health expert Dr. David R. Williams is leading the research on how racism makes us sick.
Health disparities based on income have been long established — the less money a person has, the less they have to spend on quality health care. But when adding race into the equation, the discrepancy become even greater.
Among college graduates, white people live approximately 4.2 years longer than their Black counterparts, according to Williams's research. And more surprisingly, Black college graduates have a lower life expectancy than white people with a high school diploma.
Higher levels of racial discrimination are associated with an elevated risk of a myriad of diseases, including high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Williams attributes these disparities to the increased stress brought on by dealing with racism.
There is also discrimination in medical care. Across the board, Black people and other racial minorities receive poorer quality care than white people, regardless of the health issue or complexity of treatment. Researchers attribute the care inequality to provider implicit bias, also known as unconscious discrimination.
Dr. David R. Williams will break down all his research and how it all connects (including to police brutality) during his visit to IUPUI. Join us in person Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, at 6 p.m. at the Madam Walker Legacy Center Ballroom.

Free parking available in the lots west of the Madam Walker Legacy Center, marked in the map below as lots A - D. Accessible parking available in lot A. Lot 92 is available for overflow parking.
Enter the building using the door at 617 Indiana Ave. It's the one with the Walker Building overhang and 617 above it, facing Indiana Ave. This is NOT the main marquee entrance with the ticket booth.
