The Griffith Institute: The Making of Egyptology at Oxford

The Griffith Institute was established in 1939 and named after Francis Llewellyn Griffith, the first Professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford. Since his initial estate and manuscripts were bequeathed to create a permanent home for the study of ancient Egypt and the Near East, the Griffith Institute has expanded to incorporate over 170 different collections today.

The lecture will give an overview of the history of the GI, its two major research projects – the Topographical Bibliography (Porter Moss) and the Online Egyptological Bibliography (OEB) – and its Archive, whose materials range from complete excavation records to photographs, correspondence, research materials, squeezes and watercolours. Through selected highlights, the talk explores how ancient Egyptian monuments have been documented, interpreted, and reimagined from the 18th century to the present. Featured materials include the early hieroglyphic studies of Pietro Bracci, the evocative watercolours of Hector Horeau and Amelia Edwards, the controversial but impactful use of ‘squeezes’ for epigraphic recording, and the pioneering fieldwork of Flinders Petrie and Howard Carter. Special attention is given to Carter’s meticulous excavation records of Tutankhamun’s tomb, including the now world-famous images produced by the mission’s photographer Harry Burton.

Dr Daniela Rosenow studied Egyptology and Classical Archaeology at the Humboldt University Berlin where she obtained her doctorate on Late Period sacred architecture. She has worked at UCL’s Institute of Archaeology, the British Museum, the University of Munich and the German Archaeological Institute Cairo where she directed the institute's excavation project at Dahshur. In February 2021 Daniela joined the Griffith Institute, University of Oxford, where she was responsible for the curation of the exhibition “Tutankhamun – Excavating the Archive”, and she is now the Manager of the Griffith Institute.
