About this Event
The 2025 Firefighter I Academy offered by DPSST will combine online distance education (IFSTA Resource One) with hands-on demonstrations to give students the knowledge, skills, and abilities to become firefighters. The course will meet the standards of NFPA 1001 and will use the IFSTA Essential 8th edition and IFSTA Hazardous Materials for First Responders, 6th Edition curriculums. Throughout the course, students are expected to retain and apply mental and physical knowledge on the training ground. This is an entry-level class that will teach the basic concepts of firefighting. Students must be affiliated with an Oregon Fire Service Agency to be enrolled in the DPSST 2025 Firefighter I Academy. You must register and set up an account with IFSTA Resource One prior to registering for this academy. You must submit your IFSTA Resource One registered name and email address during your registration for this academy.
Upon passing DPSST's 2025 Firefighter I Academy students will have achieved: NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800, NWCG S-130, S-190 and L-180 classes with taskbook started, NFPA Firefighter I competencies, Traffic Incident Management class and Hazmat Awareness and Operations competencies.
Academy limited to 24 students.
Students must be at least 18 years of age and affiliated with an Oregon fire service agency.
Course Information and Expectations
Students are expected to complete all assigned online material, including PowerPoint presentations, chapter quizzes prior to the start of each chapter listed below. There is also a practice test available for each chapter that we recommend as it will help you prepare for the in-person timed final chapter test. On the day of class, instructors will provide a short review and answer any questions students may have on the topic being covered that day. Once the review is completed, students will have to take a closed-book chapter test on material they have already studied. The practice chapter tests in IFSTA Resource 1 will be similar to the in-person timed final chapter tests. The in-person timed final chapter test will be taken in the DPSST computer lab and will be timed. Students are required to pass the chapter tests with 75% or higher.
The DPSST 2025 Firefighter I Academy has a set schedule, and 100% attendance is required. If a student can’t attend all the dates listed below they should not register as no make-up dates are scheduled. The schedule was created to avoid all the major holidays. If a student is unable to make a day of the academy for an unforeseen circumstance (i.e., death in the family, deathly ill dependent). In that case, their responsibility is to make the missed training their department. Make-up days will only be accepted if the student can complete all skill sheets for that required day with a DPSST-accredited department and instructor before the final scenario day on July 27, 2025.

Each Task Performance Evaluation examination is on a pass/fail basis. The student is allowed two (2) attempts to pass each skill sheet during the first skills examination. If a student fails the skill, they will immediately be given a second attempt to pass the skill sheet. If the second attempt fails, the student is considered to fail the skill sheet. If a student fails, more than two skill sheets, the student will have failed the entire skill examination. If a student fails the entire skills examination, the student must retest on a new set of skill sheets consisting of a minimum of five (5) randomly selected skill sheets at a later date.
