About this Event

Join us as we celebrate the future of Optometry at the second Seeing Beyond Lecture for 2023: A Vision to the Future.

This free, catered event will feature a select group of speakers, including Professor Bang Bui, Associate Professor Anthea Cochrane, Associate Professor Michael Pianta, and Skye Cappuccio, each of whom is making significant contributions to the optometry profession, education and vision research in Victoria.

Where: The Peter Doherty Institute Auditorium

Entrance located at 792 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne (6:30-7:30pm), followed by drinks and canapes served at the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, 200 Berkeley Street, Carlton (7:30-8:30pm)

When: Wednesday 12 July 2023, 6.30–8.30pm AEDT (1-hour lecture followed by drinks and canapes).

Parking: Free street parking surrounds the department on Berkeley Street, Pelham Street, Barry Street, and Leicester Street from 6.30pm.

Profiles of Keynote Speakers:

Professor Bang Bui completed his Masters and PhD in visual neuroscience in 2003, at the University of Melbourne. Upon completing his PhD, Bang was awarded an NHMRC CJ Martin fellowship to undertake studies into the pathogenesis of glaucoma at the Devers Eye Institute in Portland Oregon. He was the recipient of an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship in 2014. Bang is the Deputy Head of the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne, and his research group uses a range of pre-clinical models and well as clinical approaches focused on understanding the interactions between retinal vasculature, immune cells, neurons, and the risk factors underlying neurodegenerative diseases including glaucoma and diabetes.

Associate Professor Anthea Cochrane in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences has worked at the University of Melbourne since 2006. She is the Clinical Teaching Coordinator for the Doctor of Optometry Programs and coordinates the third year of the course and coordinates the fourth year of the course. Anthea has recently been appointed to the Chair of the Student Placement Advisory group responsible for discussing current challenges and best practices in student clinical placements across the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and the then entry-to-practice programs run at The University of Melbourne. Her areas of educational research interest are in clinical teaching practices and assessment and collaborative teaching practices mainly in the areas of communication and professional practice.

Associate Professor Michael Pianta in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences is Chair of the Doctor of Optometry Curriculum Committee. He was instrumental in the development of the OD program and in the incorporation of innovative teaching curricula over the last 10 years. Michael has been involved in a range of learning and teaching initiative grants to explore the most effective strategies for optometric teaching and was a previous Director of Learning and Teaching for the Melbourne School of Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne.

Skye Cappuccio has a depth of experience in senior management in non-government organisations and close to 20 years of experience in policy and advocacy roles in peak health bodies. She is currently the CEO of Optometry Australia and has enjoyed working with the organisation for over 10 years. Skye holds a BA, PostGradDipPH, GAICD, and is ever so close (finally!) to completing her MBA.
