One of Kansas City's most decorated saxophonists brings his longtime band — with a fifth chair on trumpet — for two Friday sets. 8:30 & 1...
About this Event

Doug Talley has been telling Kansas City's story through a tenor saxophone for three decades. His group — formed in 1995 and remarkably intact ever since — is one of the city's most respected working bands: Charles Williams on piano, Tim Brewer on bass, Keith Kavanaugh on drums, all four of them composers and arrangers. For this Blue Room date they expand to a quintet, adding trumpet to the front line.

Talley's resume runs deep: the 2010 Kansas Governor's Arts Award, the tenor chair in the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, and bandstands shared with Jay McShann, Clark Terry, Claude "Fiddler" Williams, Bobby Watson, and Karrin Allyson. His albums range from "Night and Day," a Cole Porter songbook that earned national airplay, to "Kansas City Suite" — ten original movements depicting the city's landmarks, including the very jazz district outside the Blue Room's doors. As a quintet, the band recorded "Chess Players," a celebrated dive into the music of Wayne Shorter.

This is sophisticated, swinging Kansas City jazz played by musicians who have spent thirty years finishing each other's musical sentences. Two chances to catch it.

Two shows: 8:30 pm and 10 pm. Admission is $10 per show.
