Doug Tallamy, an expert in ecology and native plants, will give a talk on the importance of planting native species in urban and home landscapes. The event will be held at Lumina Theatre, UNCW, on Saturday, October 12th, at 10 a.m., with tickets priced at $10. Tickets MUST be pre-purchased and will NOT be available at the door.Tallamy, known for his work on restoring native plants to North American landscapes, emphasizes how these plants support local ecosystems by providing crucial resources for wildlife. His concept of a "Homegrown National Park" encourages people to plant natives in both private and public spaces to create wildlife corridors.
His books, such as Bringing Nature Home and Nature's Best Hope, have inspired many to incorporate native plants into their gardening practices, showing how even small changes can positively impact biodiversity. Sponsored by the Cape Fear Garden Club and New Hanover County Extension Service, the event will also feature a book signing.
Parking is available near the Student Fisher Center and along Riegel Road. Visitors are also invited to explore the Native Plants Garden at the New Hanover County Arboretum for inspiration.
