The film captures the conductor's wisdom, mastery, and empathy, showing his relationships with colleagues, friends, and close collaborators, such as the director of the Czech Philharmonic, David Mareček. Bělohlávek, who began his career in childhood, returned to the Czech Philharmonic after the crisis of the 1990s, leading the orchestra to its peak form. The documentary also delves into his personal life, his relationship with music, and his family archive, including his more informal side.
Semyon Bychkov / directed by Alice Nellis / documentary / 2022 / Czech with English subtitles / 55 minutes
A documentary about Semyon Bychkov, the current chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, offering a portrait of this talented and often controversial conductor, as well as a depiction of his journey to freedom during the Cold War. Director Alice Nellis traces his life from childhood in the Soviet Union, through his emigration to Europe and the United States, to his rise on the international music scene.
