Le monde entier a vu tomber la statue d'un marchand d'esclaves, Edward Colston, à Bristol, avant d'être jetée dans le port lors d’un rassemblement Black Lives Matter. La France ne déboulonnera pas ses statues, a répondu le Président Macron. Mais la question de leur destinée demeure, car une statue est une trace de gloire… A Nancy, où j’ai grandi, la question se pose avec la statue du sergent Blandan, figure historique (1819-1842) liée à la conquête de l’Algérie et au maréchal Bugeaud, qui dès les années 1840 y mit en place une « politique de la terre brûlée».
Cette statue était en Algérie avant d’être « rapatriée » à Nancy. Mon père, Malek, la voyait enfant. Il l’a retrouvée à Nancy, où il s’est exilé. Pendant très longtemps, mon père n’a pas pu, pas su me transmettre la mémoire et l’histoire de son pays, l’Algérie. A cause/grâce à cette statue, la mémoire refoulée de son enfance pendant la colonisation a ressurgi. Il a pu nous raconter. Alors doit-on la déboulonner? Ma réponse est ambivalente. A l’effacement, je préfère le duel avec le spectre. Cette rencontre sera l’occasion d’en discuter.

Dorothée-Myriam Kellou is an Algerian and French author, journalist and filmmaker. She earned the Trace prize for investigative reporting in 2017 for her work on the war in Syria, and regularly contributes to many of the top news outlets in France.
In 2019 Kellou directed the award-winning film “A Mansourah, tu nous as séparés,” and in 2020 produced a sound documentary series for France culture, “L’Algérie des camps”, with the support of the Albert Londres prize. She published her first book, “Nancy-Kabylie,” with Grasset in 2023.
A frequent lecturer on France’s legacy of colonialism and war in Algeria, Kellou teaches investigative journalism at the university level and leads the Rawiyat collective of women filmmakers. She is a Fulbright Excellence Award recipient, as well as the 2024 Recanati-Kaplan Prize which recognizes outstanding cultural projects in the Arab world.
