About this Event
Guest Tutor: Picturebook Author and Illustrator, Dorien Brouwers
You'll spend these days:
- exploring and growing your creative style & voice
- crafting an attention-grabbing dummy book (or manuscript) with a focus on planning, pacing, layout and composition
- connecting with a passionate group of writers and illustrators in a highly inspiring setting, the heart of Rome.
Dorien'll be on hand every day to give support, run worshops and share her personal experience. She'll share her experience of the business and give you tips on getting your foot in the door in the first place.
She draws predominantly with watercolour, pen and ink and has developed a distinctive style rich in texture and detail.
She's worked worked with clients ranging from the Prado Museum (Spain) to the Tate Modern (UK), and with publishers of different sizes in both the US and in Europe. Little, Brown Young Readers (part of Hachette Book Group) acquired her two latest picture books and she is currently illustrating new books for Penguin Random House and Lemniscaat.
What’s included:
Welcome drinks and a homemade Italian dinner the first night
Breakfast every day on the rooftop terrace: freshly baked cornetti, coffee and tea
5 Picturebook Making workshops with Dorien and Diletta (each session is 90 minutes long).
3 Outings: a visit to the fabulous Borghese Gallery, a walking tour of the stunning sites around the Inky Larks studio, and an afteroon sketching around the centre of Rome
2 Group Feedback sessions where we share our work in progress, and get support and inspiration
2 Individual sessions with Dorien: one at the beginning of the week to get your picturebook started, and one at the end of the week to see your progress and plan what to do next
On the last day: drinks at Ottimo Massimo, a lovely, independent children’s bookshop in the picturesque neighbourhood of Trastevere. We'll read out our completed dummy books, and celebrate the great work done and all the progress made.
Dinner out all together for a merry lark!
