What happens when we stop worrying about drawing perfectly and just fill the page?
Join DC Bird Alliance and artist Summer Delehanty at Langston Golf Course for the second workshop in our Invitation to Nature Through Art series: Doodle Wild: Birds, Plants & the Art of Filling a Page.
If you've ever doodled in the margins of a notebook until there was barely any blank space left, you already understand the assignment.
In this playful, hands-on workshop, we'll use birds, plants, leaves, flowers, and other elements inspired by nature to create a page packed with color, shape, pattern, and personality. Summer's original workshop concept invites participants to completely fill a page with birds and other organic elements, with absolutely no prior drawing experience required.
✏️ What We'll Do
🐦 Explore the art of doodling and look at examples for inspiration
🌿 Play with birds, plants, and other natural elements to build a composition
🔎 Experiment with different sizes, shapes, and placement to make the page come alive
🎨 Learn tricks for filling those stubborn blank spaces
🖌️ Use markers, watercolor, or other materials to create your own nature-filled piece to take home
🌱 No Art Experience? Perfect.
This isn't about making a perfect bird, knowing watercolor technique, or considering yourself an artist.
It's about playing with what you see in nature and discovering what happens when you give yourself permission to make something.
Kids and teens are especially encouraged to join us!
This is a wonderful opportunity for young people who love to draw but haven't explored birding, young birdwatchers who haven't explored art, or anyone curious about the place where the two meet.
Adults are welcome, too. No birding experience is required, and you don't have to know how to draw.
Space is intentionally limited so participants can receive hands-on guidance from Summer.
What to Bring
DC Bird Alliance will provide the basic materials needed for the workshop.
If you have favorite drawing materials or a sketchbook you'd like to use, feel free to bring them.
Accessibility
This program will take place indoors in the classroom at Langston Golf Course. The facility is wheelchair accessible, with accessible restrooms, paved access around the main facilities, and accessible parking available onsite.
Public transportation: Langston Golf Course is located at the final stop of the DC Streetcar, providing direct public transit access along the H Street/Benning Road corridor.
Parking: Free onsite parking is available, including accessible parking spaces.
Registration
This workshop is free, but advance registration is required.
Because this is a small, hands-on workshop, please register only if you expect to attend. If your plans change, cancel your registration so another participant can join us.
All participants: All participants must review and agree to the prior to registration. Participants under 18 years of age must have a parent complete the Youth Release Form on behalf of the participant, .
About the Artist
Summer Delehanty is a product designer and artist with a speciality in maps, landscapes, and the natural world. She grew up in California and studied Human-centered Design at the University of Washington, Seattle. As an avid birdwatcher, she enjoys camping, travelling, and spending time in nature.
