DON LETTS hits Zerox for a one off DAY SESSION on Sat 11th July! Don Letts ‘The Rebel’ Dread’ is a true legend of British subculture - a film maker and DJ who has documented and soundtracked some of the most vital moments in music and fashion cultures across the past 50 years!
He witnessed the rise of Jamaican music in the late 60s and early 70s as it captured the feet, hearts, minds and fashion sense of British youth as Ska became Rocksteady and in turn became Reggae. He was there at the birth of Punk in London in the mid 70s and again at the rise of Hip Hop and Electro in NYC in the early 80s. He was an associate of Bob Marley, he was the first DJ in the first punk club (The Roxy), introducing Dub & Reggae sounds to the creators of the original Punk scene. He was an iconic piece in the story of The Clash (taking Joe Strummer to underground Reggae sessions, and also appearing in full Rebel Dread attire on the bands ‘Black Market Clash’ EP). Don also accompanied John (Rotten) Lydon on his infamous trip to Jamaica after the demise of the Sex Pistols - helping inspire the dub textures of the mighty PIL, and signing up many JA Reggae heroes to Virgin records revolutionary Frontline label. Don also made music as a founding member of Mick Jones’ post Clash band Big Audio Dynamite - a groundbreaking group who introduced samplers, hip hop rhythms and dance beats into the UK rock scene years before the Manchester baggy bands (who get the credit).
We could go on and on - Don Letts biog reads like a dictionary of essential cool moments in the important intersections of modern cultural history.
He can currently be found DJ on BBC Radio 6 music with his crucial Culture Clash radio show as well as playing many club and festival live DJ events with his Rebel Dread Reggae sets.
On 11th July you’ll find him running things at Zerox with a day party packed full of sound clash fire.
Expect Don playing Ska, Reggae, Dub and more in the main room with a second room (The Lobby Lounge) of DJs selecting dancefloor nuggets across Soul, Funk and of course Punk!
This is a Summer session not to be missed.
