Don Giovanni in the New World / Don Giovanni en el nuevo mundo
About this Event
200 years ago three musical icons performed New York’s first Italian opera, Don Giovanni, in lower New York. The initiative was sparked by renowned Italian librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte who encouraged Manuel Garcia to bring his troupe of Spanish singers to America to spend a year performing at the Park Theatre in downtown Manhattan. Manuel’s posse included his wife Joaquina Briones (Stiches), his son Manuel Garcia Jr, and his daughters Maria and Pauline who would later become known as the world renowned divas Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot.
This original operatic play is meant to celebrate one of the first large exchanges of Spanish culture in the United States by recreating the circumstances behind this momentous event. Written by Andrew Bell and premiered in 2018, it was hailed by Voce di Meche as "a fascinating exploration..that left us with much to think about, as well as some memorable performances dancing around in our brain"
Supported by the Spanish consulate and featuring an international cast, this event is not to be missed!
