Don Aliquo Quintet w/ Roger Bissell, Ted Wilson, Jacob Jezioro & Larry Aberman
About this Event

Saxophonist Don Aliquo leads his quintet with Roger Bissell on trombone, Ted Wilson on piano, Jacob Jezioro on bass and Larry Aberman on drums.
Don Aliquo’s playing has been described as “smooth as silk...with an unfailing feel for breath and phrasing" while extremely supple in the addressing of his axe but always zeroed in on what he's describing. “Growth” his newest release, explores new territory with intriguing compositions and ample solo space for Aliquo’s inspired improvisations. The eight originals are both complex and open, which shows him expanding his boundaries not only as an instrumentalist and improviser, but also as a composer. The music is an electrifying modern outing with one foot in the future and one in the tradition. Aliquo has released six solo projects and has worked collaboratively or performed as a sideman on many others. His previous solo cd “Sun and Shield” features veteran jazz masters Rufus Reid, Jim McNeely, and the dynamic Obed Calvaire. Notable collaborations include a duo recording with eclectic pianist Michael Jefry Stevens and quartet recordings with Roger Humphries and the late Beegie Adair. He also has recorded with his mentor, notable Pittsburgh tenor stalwart, Don Aliquo Sr. on the MCG label. Don has performed in concerts and recordings with many world-class artists including Gary Burton, Greg Osby, Rufus Reid, Roger Humphries, Harold Danko, Adam Nussbaum, Donald Brown, Pete Christlieb, Scott Robinson, and Bobby Shew. Don is Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at Middle Tennessee State University. He is a Selmer and Vandoren artist.
Roger Bissell is a trombonist, vocalist, composer, song-writer, and musical arranger living in Antioch, Tennessee. Growing up in Iowa during the 50s and 60s, he studied for 8 years with Rex Peer, and then earned B.S. and M.A. degrees in music from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. From 1971 to 1985 he free-lanced in Nashville, TN, playing on numerous local and national television broadcasts, commercial jingles, and records, as well as in a variety of local jazz and dance bands. He also played three seasons at Opryland. In 1985 he joined the Disneyland Band in Anaheim, CA and continued his free-lance work in Southern California, then moved back to Nashville in 2010 and resumed his recording and live work there, as well as performing on community concerts and jazz festivals around the country, most often with the Side Street Strutters Jazz Band.
Roger is a member of the Nashville-based Composers Collective, and he has performed on various occasions in the last several years with the Capitol Brass, the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, the Duffy Jackson Big Band, the Tyler Mire Big Band, the Jerry Vinett Big Band, and the Paul Ross Big Band, as well as with various groups at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. He has also given clinics on trombone playing and music careers for the International Trombone Association, Middle Tennessee State University, Belmont University, and Cumberland University, and he is preparing for publication a book on various aspects of music performance and business entitled "What They Didn't Teach Me in Music School." Some of his many recording credits are albums with Bobby Goldsboro, Ronnie Milsap, Dr. Hook, Jimmy Buffet, Michael Johnson, Amy Grant, Marshall Tucker Band, Tom Jones, Crystal Gayle, B. J. Thomas, the Oak Ridge Boys, the Statler Brothers, Ray Price, Floyd Cramer, Perry Como, Ray Stevens, and Boots Randolph, and his clients as a musical arranger have included Marty Robbins, Glenn Campbell, the Oak Ridge Boys, the National Geographic Society, and the Opryland and Disneyland theme parks.
Larry Aberman is a drummer whose career has taken him from the stage of Avery Fisher Hall as a percussion soloist with the NY Philharmonic to the studios of Memphis to record the Grammy winning CD “Family Style” with Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan. As an eleven-year-old student of Armand Santarelli in Philadelphia, PA, Larry decided immediately a career in music was what he aspired to. Upon moving to New York City at 15 he enrolled in The High School of Music and Art and began a life long study with jazz and percussion educator Justin DiCioccio. It was off to The Eastman School of Music for college where he studied percussion with John Beck. At Eastman, Larry recorded the Grammy Nominated CD “Carnival” with Wynton Marsalis and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. In addition to his orchestral studies, Larry was the drummer in the Eastman Jazz Ensemble, with whom he won best jazz soloist awards from Downbeat Magazine. When he got back to NY he was prepared for “whatever.” Be it performing with the Mark Morris Dance Company, recording CD’s with David Mann and Jeff Beal, playing Broadway shows or touring with rock artists Pierce Turner and Grayson Hugh, Larry got to work.
Jacob Jezioro began studying music with intention at age fourteen. His father an established Nashville bassist, guitarist and producer was his first teacher. Jacob later attended Indiana University, where his mentors were bassists Jeremy Allen and Kurt Muroki. After completing his masters degree at Berklee, Jacob performed with pianist Danilo Perez in Panama and Costa Rica and taught jazz students at the Newport Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival and FiJazz Festival. Since his return to Nashville in 2019, Jacob has performed live with his own bands and records and performs regularly with pianist Pat Coil. Coil’s trio has recorded with guest artists such as vocalist Jaimee Paul and saxophonist Joel Frahm. Jacob has also begun producing his own projects under his label, Green Box Music, and releasing them in collaboration with Burton Avenue Music, Jacob’s father’s label.
