The Soul Sunday series hosted by Debra James Tucker continues at Natalie’s Grandview with a special show “A Night of History in Song, featuring Dolly King, Mary McClendon, and Jimmi Love. They will take you on a journey from the past to the present with a collection of soulful blues, jazz, gospel & old spiritual hymns.With a vocal style reflecting her passion for singing from the soul, Dolly King has performed in the Columbus area over the years with local jazz legends Jeannette Williams and Mary McClendon, and she is also a nationally known artist, songwriter and producer who has worked with Babyface, George Clinton & the Funkadelic’s, opened for Roy Ayers & the Blackbirds, toured Europe with Foley (Miles Davis).
Mary McClendon is a Jazz vocalist, song stylist, actress and voice over talent who discovered her passion for performing at an early age… in church and school choirs. Her career took off with a three year residency at Clyde’s at Courthouse Square where she shared the stage with national and international artists. She was influenced by jazz legends…Ella, Sarah, and Nancy. and is known for her tributes to these ‘Sheroes’.
Jimmi Love has performed across national and international stages, including work as a drummer with respected artists and projects such as The Bobby Floyd Project, Jimmy McGriff, Groove Holmes, Grover Washington Jr., and Rusty Bryant. His broader live-stage résumé also includes opening for or performing with major acts across pop, R&B, jazz, and international touring circuits.
In the studio, Jimmi’s credits include singles and albums across multiple labels and collaborations—spanning gospel, pop, dance, and hip-hop—alongside recognizable projects such as Golden Gospel Singers, Culture Beat, La Bouche, and C-Block, plus his own releases including Audio Selfies.
The unique sound of vocalist Debra James Tucker is a product of extensive training in jazz, classical and gospel music. Her new album is “Voices”, which continues her exploration of early black church forms in contemporary contexts. She is the writer/performer of the one woman show Survival of the Boulevard Singer-winner of an Ohio Arts Council Award for Individual Excellence, has been a visiting instructor at Denison University in the history of African American Gospel Music, and an artist in residence with several youth arts organizations.
