7 dog deaths from exposure to toxic algae blooms while swimming in our lakes. Half our creeks with unsafe levels of fecal bacteria. Two boil water notices in three years.
Austin has a water pollution problem. Bring your dog (or come by yourself!) down to Auditorium Shores for a press conference to call on City Council to take action to clean up our waterways.
One major source of pollution is stormwater runoff. As we pave over more of the city, rain can’t soak into the ground. Instead it rushes along the concrete, picking up dog poop, fertilizer and other pollutants and pushing it all into creeks and lakes.
Nature-based infrastructure, including rain gardens and green roofs, allows rainwater to soak into the ground, slowing it down and filtering out pollution.
City staff proposed important code changes to require nature based infrastructure on commercial properties, close loopholes that allow old developments to avoid pollution controls, and reduce water polluting sprawl by encouraging in fill development.
We need City Council to take up these proposals and implement them immediately. They won’t completely solve the problem, but they’ll help a lot and they’re something we can do right now.
Let’s build a more natural Austin and guarantee healthy waters for our families, pets, and wildlife.
